• Create a waterfront for all.
  • Put the shoreline and innovative, sustainable design at the forefront.
  • Reconnect the City to its waterfront.
  • Embrace and celebrate Seattle's past, present and future.
  • Improve Access and Mobility.
  • Create a bold vision that is adaptable over time.
  • Develop consistent leadership-from concept to construction to operations.

To succeed, the waterfront must bring people to the water’s edge–allowing them to experience the water itself and the unique geography and ecology of Elliott Bay. At the same time, we must take bold steps to improve the natural shoreline ecology while also preserving and enhancing the maritime activities that remain central to the Central Waterfront. The waterfront should, in its design, construction and operation, reflect Seattle’s commitment to sustainability, innovation and responding to climate change.

It's Your Waterfront

Achieving a Waterfront for All will take an unprecedented partnership between government, local communities and civic groups – working together to identify common principles, develop a thoughtful overall approach, and recommend the tools needed to ensure the waterfront is developed and maintained as a public space for all of Seattle.

To get there, Seattle City Council adopted Ordinance 123142, which created the Central Waterfront Partnerships Committee. The committee will advise the Mayor and Council on effective models for the management, programming and use of new public spaces on the Central Waterfront. It will look at best practices from other cities, the unique challenges and opportunities we face in Seattle, and recommend the partnerships and strategies essential to succeeding with such a complex public project. The committee will not address design issues, but will recommend a process to engage the public in designing new public spaces.
